Skills Required: 
The qualified candidate should be a college student currently enrolled in classes, or a recent graduate looking to continue building skills, who is a gem of a communicator, organized and detail-oriented. The intern should have an academic major in business, writing, English, communications, marketing, journalism, public relations, visual communications and/or previous experience in communications/public relations although we are open to applicants in all majors. He or she must have a professional demeanor, strong writing skills and the willingness to ask questions. Other "must-haves" include the ability to juggle multiple projects with direction, meet tight deadlines and collaborate. The ideal candidate may also be confident in basic Microsoft Office knowledge and preferred knowledge and access to InDesign. He or she should be creative and have a desire to enhance his/her skills through meaningful involvement in the mission of the American Heart Association. The intern will be considered an integral part of the team and, as such, his or her ideas and input will be welcomed. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: •Assisting Directors with media relations activities such as researching, interviewing, writing, editing, and pitching stories to the media •Creating PowerPoint presentations for meetings or events •Working with local volunteers •Designing event collateral materials such as flyers, signage, brochures, etc. that adhere to the American Heart Association branding guidelines •Assisting with event set-up and breakdown, as needed •Assisting with other miscellaneous special projects, as needed •Assisting with communication efforts supporting various fundraising activities •Assisting with social media efforts that adhere to the American Heart Association guidelines •Assisting in the recruiting and cultivation of Community walk teams

Are you creative? Do you have a passion for
communications? Are you familiar with the twenty-six letters of the alphabet
and the ability to use them in constructing coherent, compelling copy that
aims to engage the community? Yes? Read on! The American Heart Association
seeks an intern to assist in day-to-day communications, marketing and event
planning activities. Operating out of the organization’s Knoxville area
office, the intern will play an instrumental role in meeting the needs of the
Knoxville and Tri-Cities Markets. During this internship, he or she will be
required to work at least 10 hours per week from August through May (date
range negotiable). This will give the intern the opportunity to assist with
all 3 major events, as well as help with the creative and campaign content
for our spring social events. Interns will gain invaluable experience in
event/logistical planning as well as brand management. We also rely heavily
on our interns to help with creative and collateral for our socials so there
are plenty of opportunities to add to your portfolio of work. The required
hours may be worked in any combination, at the discretion of the intern and
the supervisor, so long as the schedule is determined ahead of time and
changes are discussed in advance. Due to national guidelines aimed at
devoting most of our funds to the continuation of heart and stroke research
and education, this internship position is unpaid; however, it will offer
valuable hands-on experience in a variety of communications. marketing,
creative and logistical tasks.
