Dr. Courtney Carpenter Childers joined the School of Advertising & Public Relations faculty at the University of Tennessee in 2006. Her research interests deal with societal issues and advertising. Specifically, she has conducted research in the areas of food/beverage marketing to children, sexual imagery, and gender role portrayals in advertising. Dr. Childers has published in Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, Media Psychology, Journal of Food Products Marketing, Journal of Current Research and Issues in Advertising, and the Journal of Consumer Affairs. Dr. Childers has taught courses in Advertising and Public Relations Research (ADVT/PBRL 340), Advertising Media Strategy (ADVT 360), Advertising Management (ADVT 450), Advertising Campaigns (ADVT 470), Public Relations Campaigns (PBRL 470), Advertising Masters Project (ADVT 590), and an elective course in Social Media (ADVT/PBRL 461/561). She is a current member of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC), the American Academy of Advertising (AAA), and the International Communication Association (ICA) where she serves on various internal committees and regularly presents her research.

 

Dr. Childers (@courtchilders) is the Executive Director of the Adam Brown Social Media Command Center (@ccismcc on Twitter & Instagram) housed in the College of Communication & Information at UT. Launching in fall 2016, the Adam Brown Social Media Command Center provides CCI faculty, staff and students free access to the same leading technology that Fortune 100 companies worldwide use to publish, engage and analyze their social media marketing activities. The Adam Brown Social Media Command Center is a the only university facility in the world powered by Salesforce Marketing Cloud Social Studio technology. CCI faculty, staff and students will use the Adam Brown Social Media Command Center to collaborate, prepare and present social listening findings. The lab features six large flat panel monitors (including one 60+ inch touchscreen monitor), three Mac minis, two Apple TVs and meeting/collaboration space/seating for 25. In addition, Dr. Childers served as Chair of UT Social Media Week (UTSMW) from 2011-2016. UTSMW is a week long special event held in the College of Communication & Information where well-known speakers and panelists traveling from across the country convene in Knoxville to share social media expertise. In five years, speakers and panelists from Dell, Facebook, Nike, Salesforce, UT Athletics, Buzzfeed, CNN and others have participated in #utsmw.
